The incomplete guide to being completely insane

If being crazy means living life as if it matters, then I don’t mind being completely insane.” -Revolutionary Road

That’s what actress Kate Winslet’s character in Revolutionary Road said after friends began to think that her dream of moving her family to Paris was a crazy idea.

People will call you and your dreams crazy and insane. Embrace it! You need to be completely “insane” to achieve what you want and to live life to the fullest.

To help you embrace it here is the incomplete guide to being completely insane.

Laugh in the face of criticism

When met with criticism about their aspirations “insane” people don’t fight back, cry, become frustrated, or give up. They laugh right in the critic’s face and get right back to working on their crazy dreams.

Go big

Small-minded people – they’re often the critics – will call even the smallest of dreams crazy so don’t try to quiet or satisfy them by going for something smaller, instead go bigger and dream bigger.

Know that insane dreams are the most profound

Insane ideas and dreams are often the most revolutionary. People call them insane because they just can’t fathom such a goal since it’s rarely or never been accomplished before.

Know that the critics are the most insane

Critics are the ones who aren’t going after their dreams and for that, they are the most insane of all. They’re wasting their lives and trying to ruin the lives of others.

  1. Nothing is sweeter in life than when you accomplish something that nobody ever believed you could and criticized you for. Except maybe butter pecan ice cream on a hot summer day. Mmm.

One thing I’d suggest is that there will always be many roadblocks. Most people give up on their first roadblock but you must remember that you have to fight for anything worth having in life. I try to think to myself that for every consecutive “test” that I “pass”, my goals are nearing which motivates me to work even harder.

I totally agree with you regarding roadblocks. I consider each one a test and necessary. Then once I get over it, I’m getting close and closer to my goals.

  3. I have been meaning to write a blog post on the movie, Revolutionary Road. Many people I talked to in Japan believe Kate Winslet’s character was selfish for not supporting her husband in staying with his boring job.

I wonder how many Western people have the same view? I felt that she was extremely generous in her willingness to give up everything and support her husband in Paris while he searched for his following. She only gave up when she realized that they had no chance at a real life beyond the suburban drones.

Truly living life requires insane choices at times. However, they are only insane to those too afraid to live.

    Awesome comment John!

That’s interesting that people believed that Kate’s character was selfish. I think she wanted something better for her family and was willing to be the sole supporter of them.

  5. I’d suggest to embrace criticism. Yes, some will criticize for little to no reason. But learning to embrace criticism can help us develop thicker skin and even improve.

Take for example LeBron James. Very talented basketball player who was one of the top 5 players in the NBA. But the knock on him was his lack of jump-shooting ablility. So he has embraced that knock and became a much better shooter.

I think we all can improve by accepting it and improving.

  6. Andrew Galasetti says:

Exactly Torrey! Sometimes criticism isn’t based on truth, but then other times it is and when that’s the case the best to do is accept it in a positive way and start to improve yourself.

  9. I loved reading this. There isn’t a day this doesn’t cross my mind.
    I agree with everything said!
The realists will always try to hunt us idealists down.
Even when the road is hard, never give up because after rain comes sunshine!!
