Perhaps it was jealously or desperation that forced John McCain to refer to Barack Obama as a celebrity like Paris Hilton or Britney Spears. But McCain brings up an excellent point. Yeah, it back fired on him because Barack the celebrity is the greatest thing going for him and for the United States.
Never has there been a presidential candidate like Obama who has evoked so much passion and support internationally; let alone in his own country. It really did look like a rock concert or a rally you’d see in vintage news reels when Mr. Obama was in Europe. The McCain campaign and its supporters are brushing it off and using it as an indicator to show how Barack isn’t ready to be a leader. However, everything points to the contrary.
Let’s be honest without ourselves; Presidents do help with leading their countries. But who really makes the most difference? It’s the country’s citizens. Barack is empowering more US citizens than ever before. His celebrity status is getting people talking about this election. In a time when many have almost lost hope, Barack is now the light at the end of their tunnel. People are picking themselves up and dreaming about the future. Mr. Obama is a motivational speaker for the whole nation and the world. What makes an excellent leader? Someone who empowers others to strive for greatness.
As the speeches and tour Mr. Obama did in Europe show; international citizens are still behind America and are optimistic for its future. You can go on various websites and social networks and see people from Europe and Asia supporting Obama with his logo and slogan. They can’t even vote and they are spreading the word for the Obama campaign. You’d think they wouldn’t care about an election in a country across the globe. Obama’s celebrity status is reaching every corner of the globe and getting nations talking positively about the US.
People aren’t going to lose interest with President Obama as much as they did with the current President. People who would normally move on to other things after the election are going to follow him. They’ll want to see what he’s doing and how he’s doing.
The media is obsessed with Obama; which is much better than them being obsessed with the latest antics of Paris or Britney. If the obsessing continues during his presidency then hopefully we will see a shift of coverage from superficial gossip; to more important events and subjects.
I want world famous celebrities from our country to represent the United States in a positive, respectful way. Barack does exactly that. He embodies the melting pot that America is known for. Just about every past US President was older and white. Obama is different; McCain is pretty much the same.
Children always look up to celebrities and now they have a celebrity who’s successful, eloquent, powerful, and a great family man.
Obama is very welcoming; this’ll be extremely beneficial when talking to leaders and countries that have be hostile with America and its leaders. We need to talk to work out our differences.
Barack’s celebrity status will help spread his messages and agendas across all forms of media; from social networks to the old-fashion radio. It’s already working extremely well for his campaign and it will sure transcend to his presidency.
He hasn’t yet been elected President and he’s already left a legacy. There’s even talk about a biographical movie starring Will Smith.
A staggering amount of celebrities and famous people have backed Mr. Obama and have made public statements about their support. They aren’t keeping their political views private like past elections. Celebrities influence people tremendously. When he’s elected, Barack can harness that power for his advantage.
Celebrity fanatics stand by their idols even during tough times. Like every President before him; Mr. Obama is going to meet periods of resistance and endure a lot of negativity; but many more people will be standing by his side than jumping ship. This will surely motivate Barack to stick with it.
Politicians after politicians have talked the talked but never really accomplished anything while in office. Let’s hope Barack is not one of those politicians. With the positive pressure of millions of people counting on him; it’ll give him the motivation he needs to get things done while in office.
Please keep your comments positive and respectful. All others will be deleted.

These are excellent points. More important than a candidate’s party affiliation is his ability to motivate, influence and generate real hope for the future.
Looking around today (mid-2008), I see more discouragement, fear and hunkering down. This transcends party line and economic status.
If it’s true that what we (as individuals and as a nation) focus upon grows – how wonderful it would be to have a leader that inspires us to something other than greed, fear and war.
All prior presidential candidates have rhetoric that inspires – promises they will keep – then life happens – the world pressures and all is not the rose garden portrayed prior to real on the job life – you’ve been there – a president’s is no different. Better look at how they handle life, not what they dream about.
You bring up a great point Ellen. Thanks for sharing.

It is indeed great to see a leader that is worthy of admiration and respect therefore deserving of celebrity status. Some amazing conscious and intelligent people are gaining celebrity status like Eckhart Tolle who was featured on Oprah. Maybe there is hope!
The American public has proven that Obama is not trusted and feel unsafe when it comes to him as commander in chief. Now let’s look at his education blunders.
At the current moment, the nation’s greatest scandal may be the failure of inner-city public schools to teach children. Thanks to the teachers union, who recently endorsed Obama and has systematically convinced many teachers that No Child Left Behind is not good for the teachers (though very good for the students?), this scandal may continue. And at the expense of whom? Our children? That’s a crime that must not be allowed to continue. Thanks to our media, it has and will if Obama becomes president, or America doesn’t vote out the worst group of democrats ever in the senate and congress.
It’s a proven fact that educating those in the inner-city will reduce crime and produce better family values. Then why is the teachers union and Obama against this? Maybe because Obama needs votes and the teachers union don’t want their teachers to be graded?
John McCain is calling for alternatives to the system; Obama want the kids to stay in the current system. Why? Obama’s endorsement from the teachers union. That’s a lot of votes! But are the Obama’s hypocrites? YES! The Obama kids attend the private University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where tuition ranges from $15,500 for kindergarten to nearly $21,000 for high school. And what does Obama say when questioned? “Although it might benefit some kids at the top, what you are going to do is leave a lot of kids at the bottom.” The very wet-behind-the ears IL. senator has it backwards. Those at the top don’t need vouchers. Those at the bottom need the vouchers. Obama has failed education part I and failed miserably. But some people will still vote for him.
First time ever the republicans are complaining that the democrats have a “celebrity”….. rewind Ronald Reagan “famous real movie star celebrity”!!!!
Last time I checked Obama had no movie career…. tv or music career either.
What happen to focusing on the real issues, like the economy. These are the reasons that republicans talk crap about us, democrats. Its great that Obama has such a strong following over sees but we need a president not a celebrity.
Republicans have narrowly won two elections by playing it dirty. Just look at the ad on this page which asks – “Is it ok to meet unconditionally with Anti-American leaders” and has a photo of Obama with president of Iran.
Nevermind that Obama has not agreed to “unconditional meeting” or that President of Iran is not “Anti-American”, anti-Israel maybe.
There is a lot more at stake in this election and I hope people will wake up and realize that.
In response to Troon, as a person who went to a supremely messed up public school, I can safely say that No Child Left Behind was not helpful in the least.
To a student (or teacher) NCLB means that unless the unmotivated, disinterested students who attend run down, impoverished schools where one of every three teachers is a substitute (who may or may not be educated in the area that they’re teaching) get their act together and do increasingly well on an arbitrary test, big brother is going to step in and FUCK YOUR SHIT UP.
Does that sound conducive to learning or teaching? Really, it’s like living in Kafka world…
Washington is a perfect example for why NCLB should be rescinded immediately. Clearly, our teachers no longer have the capacity to instruct students that language has the power to counteract the excellent message Washington was trying to convey.

Pretty nice article. I’d add that the other countries follow the US election this years because they want to know if they have to get their monye out or in off the country. Sorry, but let’s put another 4-8 years of the Bush-McCain management style and your country will go straight to bankruptcy. Lot of economist know that you are in a downward spiral and lot of countries are tired of the republican “Johnny got a gun” foreing policy. Electing another could REALLY drop your country in an abysmal trouble if Japan, China or Oil producers decided to request their money back (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_public_debt)
@Troon
NCLB would be good IF there was enough teacher to actually support it. The problem is there is NOT enough folks to actually reach everyone. By adding more and more people under the same teacher you do increase the amount of people educated, but you lower everyone education. This lead to an overall LOST in education, not a gain. That is why it’s a bad thing. 1) Form more teachers 2) think about teaching. Not the inverse.
Great, so instead of anything resembling real “change”, we’re going to get yet another celeb poser who promises you idiots the world, then screws you as soon as they’re elected. If McBama’s voting record in Congress is any indication, you can expect the same war, debt, and police state shenanigans from this moron as you’ve been getting from Bush, just under a different mascot. Voting for a President because they’ve reached celebrity status is what we Americans are good at, and why we keep getting screwed. Cognitive dissonance will prevent you from admitting your mistake after the fact, just as it has the Republicans over the last 8 years, so of course you’ll stand by your man. Can’t admit to being wrong, can we?
[...] the election. In any case, maybe him being a "celebrity" in the context you are using it would not be such a bad thing, that is if the argument had any merit. As far as the economy goes, do you really think someone of [...]
Was just wondering how this “celebrity” is going now. Looks as though he would rather be a celebrity than a “President”
I’m sure he wants to be a great President but things aren’t going that way right now. Only time will tell. We have a few years left of his term. I’ll make my decision when he’s finished with his term.
