If you don’t know who Susan Boyle is, then you must not have heard of Youtube either.
Susan is a woman who has exploded on the internet for her performance on the TV show Britain’s Got Talent. Here’s a link to her mind-blowing performance if you haven’t seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY
Besides teaching us the lesson that we can’t judge a book by its cover, Susan has taught us many more lessons about achieving our own dreams, without even knowing she has done so.
Some lessons may seem trite, but Susan brings new life and a face to them. Here is what Susan Boyle has taught us about achieving dreams.
Susan Boyle has been singing since she was 12 years old and hasn’t let go of her dream of being a professional singer, even at the age of almost 48.
You don’t have to be only in your 20’s or 30’s to tackle your dreams. Age really is just a number.
When Susan was a child, she was teased a lot which was tough for her and made her shy but she never wanted to seek revenge. However, now she’s getting it, in a positive way. Many of the people who made fun of her growing up live in the same town as her and they are seeing her have her much-deserved day.
Susan’s mother recently died, she’s unemployed, and she’s never been kissed. Yet she keeps on laughing and staying positive. She wasn’t crying and making herself seem like a sob story during her appearance on the show. I think this worked to her advantage.
Positivity is one of the most important elements you need to achieve a dream.
Susan had a lot of confidence when she walked out on that stage. She knew she had talent and knew what singer she wanted to be like. Even when the audience was laughing she stayed strong.
Then after the success of her performance she didn’t let it go to her head. If you’ve seen her doing interviews, she’s still very grounded.
It’s going to take time to achieve your dreams. Overnight success is so rare. Even for Susan, the dream of becoming a professional singer has taken her 35 years to achieve and she’s still not totally there yet.
Simon Cowell asked Susan why her dream of being a professional singer hasn’t come true yet and she answered; “I haven’t been given the chance…”
However, we often need to give ourselves a chance and create opportunities for ourselves. We need to put ourselves out there instead of waiting for chances to come our way.
Susan learned this; went for it; and now look at what it has done for her.

Hi Andrew,
This is a wonderful article. I totally agree with you. This is just what people need right now.
Another 2 lessons that I may add:
1) Strength to take the first step.
Her courage, to make the first move (even though it was after so many years) towards her dream.
2) God will answer your prayer, but sometimes at unexpected moment.
She loss her mum, got no job and never been kiss. I think this could be the worst period of her life, and her prayer must have been answered. (She sings for the church)

hey!
Very inspired, i’m thinking of moving abroad to do my masters and work, try to build my career. Totally dont know what to expect, but i certainly intend to take my chances. I am afraid that at 27yrs, its not a smart idea to quite my job that is permanent and pentionable. But i feel i want more, i hope i dont regret.
